Did you know we have kangaroos and wallabies here at Blue Hills Safari Resort? If you’ve ever spotted one of our bouncy friends during a visit and wondered, “Wait… was that a kangaroo or a wallaby?” , you’re not alone!
They may look alike at first glance, but these two marsupial cousins have some pretty cool differences. And with the arrival of our brand-new baby wallaby named Houdini, we thought now was the perfect time to break it all down.
🦘 Size Matters
One of the biggest differences is size. Kangaroos are the heavyweights: tall, muscular, and built for the open range. Wallabies are much smaller and lighter.
🐾 Built for Different Terrains
Kangaroos have long, strong legs for covering ground quickly. Wallabies? They’re more agile, with shorter legs and stockier bodies that help them hop through forests, rocky areas, and tight spaces. Even their feet are different. Kangaroos have longer, narrow feet, while wallabies are designed for quick twists and turns.
🌿 What’s on their Menu?
Both love plants, but wallabies tend to browse on leaves, fruits, and shrubs, while kangaroos stick to grazing on grass. In other words, if they were at a buffet, they’d be hanging out at different sections.
🎨 Looks Can Be Deceiving
Wallabies often have more colorful or patterned coats to help them blend into forested areas. Kangaroos typically sport a more solid gray or reddish-brown coat suited to open plains.
🎩 Say Hello to Houdini
Now the best part — meet Houdini (seen above), our brand-new baby wallaby!
This little guy is already living up to his name with quick hops and a knack for disappearing into cozy corners. He’s small, sweet, and just starting to explore the ranch. Keep your eyes peeled, you just might spot him peeking out of a pouch or bouncing across the grass.
Next time you visit, you’ll know exactly who you’re looking at — whether it’s our tall kangaroo buddy or little Houdini the wallaby. Either way, they’re both unforgettable.
Come meet them in person — and while you're here, discover everything else going on at the ranch.
