Matt is the owner of Blue Hills Ranch and bought the property with the intent of always giving animals a forever home. Matt grew up in California and has been coming to Texas since he was a child.
Matt was a firefighter paramedic for 15 years, before retiring and opening a medical company. Currently Matt still volunteers for his community of McGregor in the Fire Department
Calder helps with all the projects around the ranch and is a certified welder. Calder in his spare time enjoys roping cows and eating catfish.
McKenna joined the team in October of 2021
Maddie joined the team June of 2021. She helps guide animal encounters and helps take care of the animals. She currently attends Moody High School and plans on being a veterinarian one day.
Meet The Blue Hills Ranch Volunteer Team
Mark lives in Southern California and is a very special volunteer at Blue Hills Giraffe & Animal Sanctuary. He travels to the ranch several times a year (a 24-hour drive, straight-through!) to help out on the property and take care of the rescue animals. Mark has spent over 30 years as an active volunteer and philanthropist for multiple charities, and when his daughter Lisa asked him if he wanted to volunteer at an animal sanctuary her friend Matt started in McGregor, Texas... He jumped on the chance to give back once again. Mark keeps us in line! His background in logistics and business management are essential for completing projects on-site, prepping cabins, the events barn, the animal homes and helping out the property team. But Mark's favorite activity is taking care of the animals, especially the otters Otto and Sweet Pea whom he helped rescue. "The animals are treated very well and truly enjoy the human contact, which is why I continue to come back to the ranch and be part of the group. Just a very fun and exciting place to volunteer!"
Lisa lives in Southern California and spends one week a month driving to the ranch to help out with her Dad, Mark Sr. From day one, Lisa's Dad taught her to give back, take care of others before herself and find the right non-profit organizations to which she should dedicate her time. Well, Blue Hills Giraffe & Animal Sanctuary made the list at #1! Lisa is a Biochemist and Sports Nutrition specialist in "real" life but dedicates her extra time at the ranch to doing whatever is needed (climb in a silo to raise it, build a rocking chair, feed a giraffe or kangaroo at 4am, anything.) But her favorite activity is spending time with the Asian small-clawed otters Otto and Sweet Pea whom her Dad and she rescued and donated to the sanctuary. "Blue Hills is a beautiful place where I am so honored to belong as a volunteer and share this with my Dad. I feel proud and very privileged to be a part of caring for and freeing our animals. Please join us! It's an amazing opportunity to give back."
Meet The Blue Hills Ranch Animals
I am a one year old giraffe born in April of 2020. I am excited to have a new best friend named Google.....besties....BFF....
I am going to show Google the ropes here at Blue Hills and introduce him to all my animal friends.
We are excited to announce that our friends at "Zebras R Us" have entrusted us to adopt and provide for Google the baby giraffe. He will live out his days here with Blue, our one year old giraffe. We are excited to see Blue and Google play and grow up together and be the best of pals.
Google's beautiful mother was a first time mom and wanted to explore the world, rather than be a mom. The tough decision was made to pull him from his mother because the weather became cold and wet. Google has been hand-raised by Dominique Ferraro who has become his mother for the first 6 weeks of his life. Dominique has successfully got him to bottle feed every four hours.
We are Asian small-clawed otter donated in March 2020, and are as cute as can be! Come and watch our swimming skills while we eat our favorite treat - fish popsicles!
(Otto & Sweet Pea)
We are the official "Guards" of Blue Hills Ranch. We watch over the cattle and the baby calves, and stand guard to let the other animals know if we see any possible trouble. We are a little shy but getting better at letting you see us.
We are wild zebras and came to Blue Hills Ranch in September of 2019.
(Thelma, Louise, Benda, & Marty
British White Cows
We are called British Whites, better know as the Mickey Mouse cows. We love our treats, so be sure to stop by and say hello!
We were the first two animals we got here at the sanctuary. Soon after we welcomed Monica, then along came Ross.
We help our zebras stand guard and protect our other animals from any harm. But we will also find you for some treats
(Bonnie, Clyde, Monica, & Ross)
I still drink from a bottle every 4 hours! I used to live inside the farmhouse but now I hop around the barn yard. I came to Blue Hills Ranch at just 6 weeks old.
I enjoy munching on grass and taking naps on the in the sun!
We are new to the ranch and live with our mini friends Nibbles, Mary-Ann and Ginger. We enjoy meeting new people and eating treats!
We may be small but we are mighty! The other animals don't know it but we pretty much run the place.
(Nibbles, Mary-Ann & Ginger)
I am one of the new babies here at Blue Hills Ranch! I was named after Tonkawa Falls in Crawford, TX.
I love to run around with my cow friends, McGregor & Elsa. I am new to the world and like meeting new people. If you see me, come say hello!
We enjoy welcoming new visitors coming into the ranch. If you scratch our belly we will roll over.
If you stop by, please bring treats.
(Luke, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook)
I am a Saint Bernard. I was the very first animal here at Blue Hills Ranch. I grew up in California before moving to Texas. I am a city girl coming to the country. I am the mom to all the animals that live in and around the house.
I am King Charles. I was named after Lilly Muster from the TV show The Musters. I was born in Texas, but grew up in California. I am for sure the Princess of the ranch. I love my walks, to find bugs and frogs, and to nap anywhere I want. Geneva is my big sister and we have grown up together since I was a baby. She's my favorite here.
We were donated in March of 2021 and we patrol the fence line. We will see you before you see us, but please no honking at us.
There are about 40 of us at Blue Hills Ranch. Our favorite game is hide and seek. If you see us, we will go hide again, because you are always "it".
We are the prettiest deer out there because of our unique white spots.
We love sun bathing and relaxing in open fields so that all the guest can see us!
I am a Dromedary Camel and my color is very rare. I am am still trying to figure out my long legs, but you can find me walking around the pool.
