Meet The Blue Hills Ranch
Volunteer Team

Mark Thomas

Mark lives in Southern California and is a very special volunteer at Blue Hills Giraffe & Animal Sanctuary.  He travels to the ranch several times a year (a 24-hour drive, straight-through!) to help out on the property and take care of the rescue animals. Mark has spent over 30 years as an active volunteer and philanthropist for multiple charities, and when his daughter Lisa asked him if he wanted to volunteer at an animal sanctuary her friend Matt started in McGregor, Texas... He jumped on the chance to give back once again. Mark keeps us in line! His background in logistics and business management are essential for completing projects on-site, prepping cabins, the events barn, the animal homes and helping out the property team. But Mark's favorite activity is taking care of the animals, especially the otters Otto and Sweet Pea whom he helped rescue. "The animals are treated very well and truly enjoy the human contact, which is why I continue to come back to the ranch and be part of the group. Just a very fun and exciting place to volunteer!"

Lisa Thomas

Lisa lives in Southern California and spends one week a month driving to the ranch to help out with her Dad, Mark Sr.  From day one, Lisa's Dad taught her to give back, take care of others before herself and find the right non-profit organizations to which she should dedicate her time. Well, Blue Hills Giraffe & Animal Sanctuary made the list at #1! Lisa is a Biochemist and Sports Nutrition specialist in "real" life but dedicates her extra time at the ranch to doing whatever is needed (climb in a silo to raise it, build a rocking chair, feed a giraffe or kangaroo at 4am, anything.) But her favorite activity is spending time with the Asian small-clawed otters Otto and Sweet Pea whom her Dad and she rescued and donated to the sanctuary. "Blue Hills is a beautiful place where I am so honored to belong as a volunteer and share this with my Dad. I feel proud and very privileged to be a part of caring for and freeing our animals. Please join us! It's an amazing opportunity to give back."

Meet The Blue Hills Ranch Animals

I am a two year old giraffe born in April of 2020.  I am excited to have a new best friend named Google.....besties....BFF....

I am going to show Google the ropes here at Blue Hills and introduce him to all my animal friends.

We are the official "Guards" of Blue Hills Ranch. We watch over the cattle and the baby calves, and stand guard to let the other animals know if we see any possible trouble. We are a little shy but getting better at letting you see us.

We are wild zebras and came to Blue Hills Ranch in September of 2019.

(Thelma & Louise)

Quarter Horses

We were rescued November of 2021. You can find us hanging out with our Mustang friends.

Google is the new boy on the block and is following after his best friend Blue.

We are Asian small-clawed otter donated in March 2020, and are as cute as can be! Come and watch our swimming skills while we eat our favorite treat - fish popsicles!

(Otto & Sweet Pea)

red kangaroo

I used to live inside the farmhouse but now I hop around the barn yard. I came to Blue Hills Ranch at just 6 weeks old.

I enjoy playing with the pigs and laying under my tree.

Mini Donkeys

We were the first two animals here at the sanctuary. Soon after we welcomed Monica, then along came Ross.

We help our zebras stand guard and protect our other animals from any harm, but we will also find you for some treats.

(Bonnie, Clyde, Monica, & Ross)

Wild Mustangs

We came to the ranch fall of 2021 from the ranges of Utah and Nevada. We are still very shy but enjoy seeing new people.

Angus Cows

I am a special little brownish-red girl cow that was donated to the ranch in October 2020.  I am blind and needed a good forever home.  I was named after a special little boy named Corbin "James" who is our favorite visitor here.

My mom is my guide to the world and is very protective of me.  I am still learning all the new sounds and smells of the different animals.

(Jaime & Nancy)

I was named after Tonkawa Falls in Crawford, TX. I love to run around with my cow friends, McGregor & Elsa.

I am  King Charles. I was named after Lilly Muster from the TV show The Musters. I was born in Texas, but grew up in California.  I am for sure the Princess of the ranch.  I love my walks, to find bugs and frogs, and to nap anywhere I want.  Geneva is my big sister and we have grown up together since I was a baby.  She's my favorite here.

I am a Saint Bernard. I was the very first animal here at Blue Hills Ranch.  I grew up in California before moving to Texas.  I am a city girl coming to the country.  I am the mom to all the animals that live in and around the house.
